STEPHENVILLE (June 13, 2018)– At last night’s city council meeting, the Stephenville city council presented Jake and Dorothy’s owner Kerry Roach with a key to the city and a proclamation of recognition in honor of Jake and Dorothy’s 70th anniversary.

The city council also voted to leave place 3 of the city council vacant until the next May election. Place 3 became vacant after former city councilman Doug Svien was elected mayor.

“Choosing a city council replacement should be up to the voter,” councilman Mark McClinton said.

Additionally, the city council unanimously approved the creation of a special Tourism and Visitors committee made up of three council members. This committee’s responsibilities include making recommendations for a permanent committee and approving HOT tax fund applications.

Boyd Waggoner, owner of soon-to-open restaurant Burger Joint on Graham Street, requested a special permit in order to sell alcohol in the downtown area. The council approved the permit with a dissenting vote from councilman Alan Nix.

Mayor Doug Svien presented the council with their committee assignments. The head of each committee is as follows:

  • Finance – Mark McClinton
  • Community Services – Sherry Zachery
  • Personnel – Sherry Zachary
  • Planning and Development – Brandon Huckabee
  • Public Health and Services – Brady Pendleton
  • Nominations – Rhett Harrison
  • Public Works – Alan Nix
  • Tourism and Visitors Bureau – Carla Trussell
