STEPHENVILLE (June 22, 2018) – Theatre at Tarleton and The Summer Studio presents the play “Love Letters” by A. R. Gurney. The play will begin at 7:30 p.m. on June 28, 29, and 30 and July 5, 6 and 7 and will be held in the Workshop Theater of the Clyde H. Wells Fine Arts Center at Tarleton State University.

In the words of the author, “Love Letters,” is a unique and imaginative theatre piece that “needs no theatre, no lengthy rehearsal, no special set, no memorization of lines, and no commitment from its two actors beyond the night of performance.”

The piece is comprised of letters exchanged over a lifetime between two people who grew up together, went their separate ways, but continued to share confidences. As the actors read the letters aloud, what is created is an evocative, touching, frequently funny but always telling pair of character studies in which what is implied is as revealing and meaningful as what is actually written down.

Two faculty members at Tarleton star in the play. Associate professor of theatre arts, Mark Holtorf, plays Andrew Makepeace Ladd III and Vice President of Development, Janice Horak, plays Melissa Gardner.

Horak said that she decided to star in the play because of the opportunity to work alongside Holtorf and to create a character that the playwright, A.R. Gurney, would approve.

“The audience will share in the character’s lifetime of joys and struggles,” Horak added.

Horak also hopes the audience takes away two things from this play.

“Good writing makes a great play and friendships are worth the time and effort it takes to maintain them,” Horak said.

Tickets are $10 for adults and $8 for senior citizens, children and Tarleton students, faculty and staff. The play is also rated “Mature.”

“The Clyde H. Well Fine Arts Center is a wonderful facility,” Horak said. “The Workshop Theater within this facility is a fabulous space that allows the audience to experience the play in an intimate fashion and Tarleton Summer Theater helps financially support the Tarleton Theatre program and Tarleton students.”
