Dublin football finds itself in a new district this year, but it’s still the same old song and dance for the Lions who have one whale of a football schedule when it comes to District 6-3A DII play.
The league features Comanche (regional finalist), Jacksboro (regional semifinalist), Tolar (area finalist) and Rio Vista (bi-district finalist) and Millsap a team returning 14 of 22 starters.
For coach Bob Cervetto and his team watching Tolar reach the area round was tough when all that separated the Lions from making that trip was a difference was a high snap and two points between the two teams last year.
Dave Campbell’s Texas Football magazine has predicted the Lions will finish fifth in district play. Cervetto is bound to use that a form of motivation for Dublin and perhaps folks are overlooking the fact the Lions’ junior varsity was a solid 7-3 last year.
That’s good and bad in the football world because it means you have talent, but it’s also young unseasoned talent.
The Lions will depend on senior leadership and the “do-it-all” play of Jacob Stanley who plays running back, wide receiver, defensive back and kick returner. Stanley accounted for nine touchdowns last year and an average of 92.3 total yards per game on offense.
When it comes to defense linebacker, Jared Ricks brings the thunder when he lowers the boom, and he had an average of 8.2 tackles per game last season.
The Lions are expected to start Cy Wing at quarterback. Wing saw limited action last season and has a firm grasp of the offense headed into this season.
Texas Football also gave props to Hagen Huffman RB/DB, Mark Ybarra DB/WR, Cesar Tavera DL and Tyler Bell DL/RB.
The predicted finish in District 6-3A is Comanche, Jacksboro, Tolar, Millsap, Dublin and Rio Vista.
