Caples named new assistant coach of Tarleton Baseball program

STEPHENVILLE – Jacob Caples has been named the next assistant baseball coach at Tarleton State University. His role at Tarleton includes being the recruiting coordinator and hitting instructor.

“We’re excited to have Jacob joining the program,” said head coach Bryan Conger. “He is coming from a very good Arkansas-Monticello program with an awesome mentor in Coach John Harvey. Jacob has a great understanding of where college baseball is headed and has valuable offensive experience to continue the direction we want to go. He’s also a tireless recruiter.”

Caples comes to Tarleton with five years of NCAA Division II experience under his belt after spending his final two years of playing eligibility at West Texas A&M and the last three seasons as an assistant coach at Arkansas-Monticello. He steps into the top assistant role on Conger’s staff, replacing Ben Buck who was named the head coach of Lamar Community College last month.

“As a player and coach, I have had the opportunity to witness what Tarleton Baseball is all about,” said Caples. “The teams I’ve seen led by Coach Conger have been resilient and, as a coach, I have seen a great deal of respect for Coach Conger and the Tarleton Baseball program across the coaching community.

“Coach Conger has developed a forward-thinking program here and I am honored to have a chance to lead that front from the offensive side,” he continued. “I’m excited to be a part of a program that sets themselves apart by the way they develop athletes and to be a part of this great Tarleton State University community.”

Over the past three season, Caples has helped Arkansas-Monticello to three consecutive championship seasons in the Great American Conference.

In his first season with the program, the Boll Weevils went 40-16 and were the GAC Tournament Champions. They advanced to the regional tournament finals. The team followed up in 2017 with their second straight tournament title and NCAA regional berth. In Caples’ final season at Monticello, his team earned the regular season championship. Arkansas-Monticello went 103-56 over the last three seasons with Caples on the bench.

In 2016, Caples helped coach Corey Wood to the Josh Willingham Award with 26 home runs, 90 RBI, and a .375 batting average. In his final year with the Boll Weevils, Caples’ team accounted for 14 all-conference players, four all-region players, and an All-American. The team his .321 with 79 home runs.

Prior to his coaching career, Caples began playing collegiately at Western Texas College where he was an honorable mention all-conference catcher and helped his team to the first NJCAA tournament appearance in school history. From there, he continued his career at West Texas A&M in the Lone Star Conference and was an all-conference second team selection as a junior before helping his team to their first conference championship in school history in 2015.

Caples is a native of New Caney, Texas and graduated from New Caney High School. He received a bachelor’s degree from West Texas A&M in 2015 in sport and exercise science. He earned a master’s degree in physical education and coaching from Arkansas-Monticello in 2016. He resides in Stephenville with his fiancé, Victoria.
