Summer workouts for the Stephenville Yellow Jackets football team continue this week, and there’s not much time before the conditioning becomes practice for real.
“The other coaches and I are going to be headed to coaching school next week,” coach Greg Winder said Monday. “We are going to depend on you guys to lead the way and keep this up.”
Included in keeping this up is runs up and down the steep hill at the Stephenville City Park, pumping truckloads of iron in the weight room, sand volleyball and even pushing trucks. Yes, the Jackets are pushing around a pickup or two.
Stephenville has been picked by Dave Campbell’s Texas Football magazine to win their district and make a deep playoff run this season, and it’s something Winder has experienced in the past.
“You know those guys are looking at how many starters we have coming back on each side of the ball,” Winder said. “It’s something for the guys to be proud of but we are keeping our minds focused on the teams we have to play each week.”
Stephenville has a preseason schedule that keeps looking tougher every time a foot fan takes a glance at it with none more noticeable than Argyle. Coincidentally the Eagles were also ranked number three when they met the Jackets in the playoffs last season before Stephenville knocked them out the playoffs 31-28.
The Jackets will be playing their first three games on the road this season with trips to Everman and Wylie on the slate before they finally get a home game against Midlothian Heritage September 21.
