Dublin (July 16, 2018) – During the Dublin ISD school board meeting Monday night, five state qualifying band members were recognized. Juniors, Cason Miller (left) and Jakob Hines (right) were recognized at the meeting. Junior, Colton Bradberry; sophomore, Ella Frederick; and recent graduate, Hailey Blackwell, were also recognized for their achievements.

There were no substantial changes in the 2018-2019 Student Handbook and the Student Code of Conduct. Some changes were made in the 2019-2019 Employee Handbook. Individuals have to abide by the state law that holds employees accountable if they are texting and driving. The handbook now includes language for the school marshal in the Guardian Program. The identity of the individuals in the Guardian Program are to remain confidential and if some individual releases the identity of a marshal or a guardian, then action will be taken.

For all of the individuals who are still candidates for the Guardian Program, they have just recently finished three days of tactical reference training. As of today, Dublin ISD’s employees have anywhere from seven to nine days of training and more is planned. The individuals in the program have to go through the process of the second round of weapons qualifications, which is the one used by law enforcement. Individuals will have to go through two days of simulation training involving simulation guns, as well as two days of campus and district-wide active shooter training at the beginning of the school year.

“One of the questions that was brought up in our administrative meeting was, ‘What do we do with individuals who are not carrying a gun?'” Dublin ISD Superintendent Rodney Schneider said. “We are going to be providing one full eight-hour day of personal self-defense training. If an individual does get into a classroom, can a teacher defend themselves and defend the students? We’re going to put all of our teachers and educational staff through that; working on simulation scenarios with Dublin Police Department, as well as some training with our experts.”

The board also discussed an eight-hour day of mental health training with the staff to try to help them identify individuals with mental health issues.

The 2018-2019 District Calendar was revised. The board decided to remove the “incentive week” that was held at the end of each school year to address specific needs with students. Teachers, students and parents did not like the “incentive week” so it has been removed.

The board also considered a proposed tax rate. The tax rate won’t be adopted until Aug. The board proposed the same tax rate as last year with $1.3324 per $100 valuation, $1.17 is for maintenance and operations and $.1624 is for debts.

The board had planned to hold a closed session discussing the adoption of a resolution pursuant to District Policy CKE appointing a school marshal but decided against it. The board will adopt a blank resolution that can be released to the public. The school marshal has had over 80 hours of intense training in San Antonio in June.

There will be a special called meeting on July 30 at 6 p.m. discussing the 2018-2019 budget.
