STEPHENVILLE (July 17, 2018) — It’s no secret Tarleton State University students are outstanding leaders.

This past week, four undergraduate students enrolled in Tarleton’s College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences were elected to the 2018-2019 Texas FFA Association’s officer team during the 90th annual Texas FFA State Convention in Fort Worth.

The 12-member state officer team — nearly half are Tarleton students — will serve a one-year term and travel approximately 40,000 miles across Texas, visiting about 400 schools and FFA chapters.

The newly elected, 12-member Texas FFA Association state officer team includes four students currently enrolled at Tarleton State University. Tarleton students elected to the 2018-2019 Texas FFA state officer team are:
• First Vice President Preston Cummings, a sophomore majoring in agricultural education, from Area XII’s Georgetown FFA Chapter;
• Vice President Kenna Ferguson, a freshman majoring in agricultural education, from Area II’s Haskell FFA Chapter;
• Vice President Ryan Driggers, a sophomore, majoring in agricultural education, from Area V’s Greenville FFA Chapter; and
• Vice President Ashlie Thompson, a freshman, majoring in pre-veterinary medicine, from Area VI’s Lindale FFA Chapter.

In addition to the new state officers, two Tarleton students were elected to serve on the Texas Collegiate FFA officer team. Tarleton sophomore, Tyler Schuster, an agri-industries and agencies major from Brackettville, Texas, was elected vice president, and Alyali Marcano, a sophomore agricultural education major from Irving, Texas, will serve as student advisor.

Michelle Damerau, instructor and program coordinator with Tarleton’s Department of Agricultural and Consumer Sciences, received the Honorary Lone Star FFA Degree at the Texas FFA State Convention — the highest honorary degree bestowed by the Texas FFA.

Damerau joined the Tarleton staff as a student worker in 2011. She became a graduate assistant for Dr. Ted Ford in 2015 and full-time faculty member the following year. She serves on the Revision Cycle and Career Development Events Committee, working with Texas FFA Association staff to execute a number of state and national FFA events and contests.

The 90th annual Texas FFA State Convention recorded approximately 12,000 members and guests last week in Fort Worth. Members of the state’s largest agricultural youth leadership organization spent the week attending leadership workshops, participating in events and activities, being recognized for their achievements, and serving as the legislative body for the Texas FFA Association.

The Texas FFA is the nation’s largest state FFA association with a membership of more than 123,000. FFA gives students the opportunity to apply practical classroom knowledge to real-world experiences through local, state and national competitions.
