The gift, generously made by Cross Plains Garden Club member Julia Wheeler, club president Diana Miller and other members of the club, officially established the scholarship endowment during a June 29 signing ceremony.
“The objective of the Cross Plains Garden Club is to promote interest and study in gardening within our community, to participate in the beautification of our parks and to support our local residents,” said Miller. “Through our annual plant sale, funds are generated that support our ability to provide an annual $500 scholarship and contribute regularly to our many area volunteer organizations. We are pleased to join with Tarleton State University in the development of our perpetual scholarship and look forward to our new relationship with the university.”
Eligible recipients of the Cross Plains Garden Club Scholarship are full-time students from Cross Plains High School, with preference toward Callahan County residents, including those graduating with a GED or home-schooled. The new scholarship will be awarded annually through the Tarleton scholarship office.
The gift establishing the Garden Club’s endowed scholarship, follows a contribution by Ted and Julia Wheeler in October 2013, which created the Lee Wayne Wheeler Scholarship in memory of their son. Lee Wayne Wheeler was a senior agriculture major at Tarleton when he died in a car accident in 2001.
The two endowments of $10,000 each will generate $500 per year for scholarships.
