No. 13 TexAnns finish second, Khaw wins first individual title at Tarleton Invitational

GLEN ROSE – No. 13 Tarleton Women’s Golf moved up one spot on the final day of the Tarleton Invitational to come away with a second-place finish at Squaw Valley Golf Course.

The TexAnns battled the rain all morning to shoot a 298 in the final round for a total score of 593 (+17). St. Edward’s won the tournament with a score of 584 (+8).

“I’m happy with the way they played,” said first-year head coach Isabel Jimenez, who made her head coaching debut this week. “It’s our first tournament after the long summer break but the girls’ performance was great. We have a month to practice for our next tournament and I know they will keep improving.”

Junie Khaw came away with her first career individual title, carding a 142 (-2) overall for first place. Khaw had rounds of 70 and 72 to finish one stroke ahead of Sarah Wongsinth of Texas A&M-Commerce. The sophomore from Malaysia led the field with 28 pars and added five birdies in the two rounds. Khaw also shot -1 under on Par 4’s with an average score of 3.95 to lead the individuals.

Raelynn Hardgrave finished tied for seventh with a score of 73-74-147 (+3). Hardgrave, a freshman from Conroe, tied for the team lead with five birdies in the tournament and also recorded 23 pars.

Casey Leatherman climbed five spots on the individual leaderboard to finish tied for 13th with a score of 76-75-151 (+7). Leatherman had a strong finish to her round, shooting 2-under on the final five holes. Overall, Leatherman posted 23 pars and three birdies.

Breanna Smith finished 20th for her second top-20 finish of her career. Smith had rounds of 76-77-153 (+9). Smith recorded 21 pars and three birdies.

Louise Caldon and Sophie Caldon tied for 22nd while each shooting a 77 and 78 in the rounds for a total score of 155 (+11). Louise was second on the team with four birdies and also had 18 pars, while Sophie totaled three birdies and 22 pars in the tournament.

The TexAnns will play the Women’s D2 National Preview at the PGA National in Palm Beach Gardens, Florida, the site of the NCAA Division II National Championship, on Oct. 15-16.
