Stephenville’s defense produced five turnovers and limited Abilene Wylie’s Bulldogs to just 63 yards on 32 carries as the Jackets moved to 2-1 Friday night with a 41-28 road win.

Senior running back Krece Nowak had 219 yards including a 65-yard touchdown that gave Stephenville a lead they would never surrender in the second quarter of play.

The Bulldogs drew first blood, but it was the Jackets who kept stinging once they got on track in the second quarter with a 23-yard field goal by Chance Carillo with 9:27 to play in the first half. A Wylie turnover led to Nowak’s touchdown and a Cole Stanley one-yard run and a second field goal by Carillo (39-yards) pushed Stephenville out front at the half 20-14.

If Jackets did anything wrong it was 108 yards in penalties.

“Those penalties just drive me crazy and that’s something we have to correct,” coach Greg Winder said. “Anytime you can come into Wylie and come away with a win it’s a good day.”

Senior defensive back Gage Graham gave Stephenville a two-score lead when he returned an interception 35 yards for a score. The score marked the third straight week Stephenville’s defense has gotten in on the scoring.

“This defense is something to watch,” Winder said. “Not that they don’t always bring it, but tonight was something else.”

Gavin Rountree finished out the Jacket scoring catching a 21-yard pass from Kade Renfro and a 28-yarder from Stanley for a pair of touchdowns.
