STEPHENVILLE (September 17, 2018) — Two days jam-packed with activities, including two separate ring ceremonies and a Corps of Cadets march, highlight this year’s annual Family Weekend at Tarleton State University Sept. 21-23.
Tarleton’s Corps of Cadets and the marching band will meet the Texans at the statue of Major Gen. James Earl Rudder and lead them onto the field in a march named for a pivotal World War II battle site that featured the Tarleton alumnus.
“The Pointe-du-Hoc spirit and support from the Corps joins with the students and cheerleaders to inspire the football team from the perspective of following Gen. Rudder into battle,” said LTC Lee Evans, assistant commandant of the Texan Corps of Cadets.
The march begins at the dining facility, symbolizing pre D-Day preparations by the Rangers who scaled Pointe-du-Hoc. The team begins its march west up Rudder Way representing the climb up towards the cliffs of Pointe du Hoc from Omaha beach.
“As the walk progresses, they see the stadium before them and the figure of Rudder with the Corps and band positioned to linkup and complete the mission of defeating the team entering Memorial Stadium that day,” Evans said.
The ring ceremonies, presented by the Tarleton Alumni Association, memorialize personal achievements and mark educational milestones toward students’ goals of graduation.
“The Official Tarleton Ring serves as a constant reminder of the lifelong memories made as a member of the Tarleton family,” said Director of Alumni Engagement Jessica Evans. “It is a symbol of hard work and dedication, and sends a message to the world that the wearer is proud to be affiliated with the prestige and distinction reserved for Tarleton alumni.”
At each ceremony, students will receive their official university rings from President F. Dominic Dottavio and Tarleton Alumni Association President Ken Dorris.
This year’s Family Weekend festivities build toward Saturday’s tailgate on the parking lot of Tarleton’s venerable Memorial Stadium followed by the Lone Star Conference football clash between the Texans and UT Permian Basin.
A pair of TexAnn volleyball matches, movie on the lawn, petting zoo, planetarium presentations, food, open houses, tours and information sessions round out the weekend.
