STEPHENVILLE (September 17, 2018) – The monthly Stephenville Independent School District’s Board of Trustees Meeting on Monday night kicked off with a drumline from the Stephenville High School band, following recognition for Mike Copeland, a coach for Stephenville ISD since 1969 who spent 41 years with the Yellow Jackets and Honeybees. He was recognized for using the Core Value: Excellence.

The board approved a schematic design of additions and renovations to the Stephenville High School with a new auditorium, new gym and athletic facilities, new performing arts center and new agriculture facility. Substantial completion of the renovations is projected to be in October 2020.

The board heard updates on the softball field bids and process. On Sep. 11, Huckabee Incorporated, an engineering service, took proposals for the softball field. The process will be three months long. Huckabee also received a total of eight proposals from eight different contractors. They are scheduled to come back next Wednesday, Sep. 26 at 5:00 p.m. to present the package and renovation schedule for the board to approve.

The board also discussed The Catastrophic Leave Bank. The Catastrophic Leave Donation Program allows the continuation of salary and benefits for an eligible employee who has exhausted all paid leave due to: a catastrophic illness or injury (applied to disability waiting period) caring for a catastrophically ill or injured family or household member.

The Catastrophic Leave Balance ending on May 16, 2018 was 862 days. 321.5 days were donated to The Catastrophic Leave Bank. 32 days of catastrophic leave were granted to employees during the 2017-2018 school year. The current balance of days available in The Catastrophic Leave Bank beginning Sep. 1, 2018 is 1151.5 days.

Superintendent Matt Underwood also spoke a few words about The Guardian Program.

“I have some information from parents. I’ve heard pros and cons about The Guardian Program. I do feel that there is a concern on how quickly we can respond to try to get everything in place, but I also think it’s healthy sometimes to take a breath and listen to what other people have to say, digest that and think about that because some part of what we talked about tonight and rushing forward with an emergency and maybe it’s not an emergency. We gotta keep in mind it’s been 115 years that people have been without The Guardian Program so I think we can take a little bit of time,” Underwood said.

The board decided to table the discussion of an approval of a general contractor or program manager for the May 2018 bond program.

The board also approved the company CRUX for the Safety and Security Consulting Firm and approved the 4-H Ag Extension Agents’ Adjunct Faculty Status.

The Chamber of Commerce New Educator Breakfast will be on Wednesday, Oct. 3 from 6:45-8:00 a.m. at the FBC Paradigm.
