STEPHENVILLE – Tarleton enjoyed the largest rise of the week in the latest national poll by the American Football Coaches Association as the Texans moved up four spots to No. 21 in the last rankings.
Tarleton occupied the final spot in the poll over the last week when they went into Angelo State on Saturday night and handed the Rams a 54-33 loss at LeGrand Stadium. It’s the fourth straight game that Tarleton has topped 40 points, which marks the first time for that feat since 2011. Following the win, Tarleton doubled its total point total in the poll with 177 this week. The Texans had 80 ranking points last week.
The Texans are one of three Lone Star Conference teams ranked in the AFCA national poll, joining Midwestern State at No. 5 and Texas A&M-Commerce at No. 9. West Texas A&M received nine votes in the poll after a road win at No. 14 Central Washington Saturday night.
This marks the fifth different season that Tarleton has been ranked under head coach Todd Whitten. The ninth-year leader of the Texans led Tarleton to its first national ranking in 2001 and took them as high as No. 6 in the nation during the 2002 season. This is the 88th week in Tarleton’s NCAA history the Texans have been ranked, including the second straight week this year.
Tarleton will be back home at Memorial Stadium in Stephenville this weekend for a 7 p.m. showdown against Eastern New Mexico, who is coming off a 31-23 loss to No. 5 Midwestern State in Portales last weekend.
