STEPHENVILLE (October 16, 2018) — The Tarleton State University women’s rodeo team continues to dominate the National Intercollegiate Rodeo Association’s Southwest Region.
Led by Mary Risse who claimed the women’s all-around title over the weekend, Tarleton accumulated 455 points in the West Texas A&M University rodeo in Amarillo, and posted their third first-place finish in four fall events.
Risse tied for first place in goat tying with teammate Lariat Larner, each turning in identical 6.5-second runs in the first round, then added a 6.9 in the finals for top honors on the event. She also flashed a two-head 6.7 for fourth in breakaway roping.
Joining Risse and Larner in the event finals were Jenna Dallyn and Katie Stewart. Larner split the win in the long round and went 7.0 in the short go, which put her in second place for the weekend. Dallyn’s runs of 6.8 and 7.4 resulted in fifth place and Stewart, who finished with a two-run 14.3, took sixth.
Tarleton sent six women to Sunday’s breakaway roping finals including eventual champion Rickie Engesser, whose combined 4.9 time included a long-go best 2.4 and a 2.5, which was quickest in the finals.
Teammates Risse, Abby Medlin, Hayley Danley, Cheyenne Britain, and Kambria McDougal also accompanied Engesser in the short round. Medlin took eighth in the average, despite barrier problems in the finals; Danley was ninth overall, including a 2.5 that was good for second place in the first round; and Britain and McDougal were both 3.0 seconds in the long go, finishing in a tie for 10th in the finals.
Barrel racers Sam Smith, Maddy Dickens and Paige Wiseman were all in Sunday’s finals, too. Smith finished second in the average with a 17.44-second run in the long go, coupled with her finals run of 17.63 seconds. Dickens finished with times of 17.42 and 17.89 taking fifth in the average. Wiseman finished one place back in the average with times of 17.68 and 17.67.
With their performance in Amarillo, the Tarleton women increased their lead in the regional standings to 1,425 points nearly doubling the points of second place Weatherford College.
Tarleton’s men’s team took fourth at West Texas, paced by a trio of bareback riders who qualified for the finals.
Jacob Springer led the pack with a second-place average finish and teammates Tyler Berghuis and Bodee Lammers also qualified for the short round. Berghuis earned a score of 73 in the first round and finished in seventh while Lammers, who wound up in eighth overall, claimed a spot in the short go with a first-round 62.
It was a pair of Jakes for Tarleton in saddle bronc riding. Jake Barnes, who posted rides of 72 and 73 points, was second overall; and Jake Burwash took seventh in the average with a two-head total of 129.
Dallas Owens and Ty Ross collected third-place points in team roping with their two-head 16.00-second time; Tarleton heeler Zach Kraus and partner Tyler Stegall of Ranger College took sixth; and Jacob Perkey of Tarleton combined with Dudley Storey of RC for seventh.
Tarleton steer wrestler Tyler Muth finished second in the average among steer wrestlers with times of 4.8 and 4.2 seconds. Teammate Jhett Jackson flashed times of 5.0 and 4.3 second, good for fourth overall. Ty Allred’s combined 10.6 time earned him seventh place in the average.
Both Tarleton rodeo teams are taking a break from Southwest Region competition this week and will wind up the fall schedule at Texas Tech Oct. 25-27.
Tarleton Memorial Weekend, Friday Oct. 19 through Sunday, Oct. 21, will feature rodeo team members in action barrel racing, team roping, breakaway roping and goat tying.
