STEPHENVILLE – Tarleton men’s basketball is picked to finish third in the annual Lone Star Conference preseason poll as part of the LSC Online Basketball Media Day, the league announced Wednesday.

The Texans received 236 votes in the poll. Texas A&M-Commerce is picked to win the league, receiving 254 votes and 15 first-place votes. Last year’s league champion, West Texas A&M, is second with 238 votes and 11 first-place votes.

The LSC preseason poll is voted on by LSC head coaches, sports information directors and media representatives throughout the league.

“I think that’s a fair overall look for the conference,” said first-year head coach Chris Reisman. “When you look at how the teams finished last year with West Texas A&M going to the Final Four and returning quite a few lettermen from that team and Texas A&M-Commerce returning a couple all-conference guards, then you look at us returning eight lettermen and won 19 games, I think it’s a fair rundown of what people might think the league will shape up to be.

“As it is every year, the Lone Star is unpredictable,” Reisman added. “Any team can come in and compete and beat you. I’ve seen years where teams were ranked as low as five and won the league. Every night is going to be a battle just as it’s always been. There’s going to be plenty of great coaches and players and it’s going to be another exciting year in the Lone Star Conference.”

The Texans are coming off a 19-11 season where they finished third in the LSC with a 12-6 record. The Texans advanced to the LSC tournament semifinals.

Reisman returns eight letter winners and four starters from last year’s squad, including a pair of all-conference players and the top two scorers in Corinthian Ramsey (18.6 points, 4 assists) and Josh Hawley (13.7 points, 9.3 rebounds).

Other key returning players are Jaraan Lands (9.9 points, 5.1 rebounds), Jesse Hill (5.4 points, 3.7 rebounds), Preston Enloe (5.6 points, 41 percent 3-pointers), Clashon Gaffney (2.6 points, 2.3 rebounds) and Sam Marshall (2.4 points, 1.7 rebounds). Ramsey, Hill and Lands are the only three seniors on the roster.

Reisman and his staff went out and recruited six players to fill out the roster. The roster additions include three Division I transfers in Randall Broddie (Memphis/Walters State), Richie Mitchell (Marist), Brandon Goldsmith (North Carolina Central), one Division II transfer in Grey Parrish (Dallas Baptist) and two from high school.

Tarleton will open the season on the road for the Small College Basketball Hall of Fame Classic in St. Joseph, Missouri against Missouri Western on Nov. 3 and William Jewell on Nov. 4. The Texans will have their home opener for the Texan Tip-Off Classic on Nov. 9-10 against UC-Colorado Springs and University of the Southwest.
