The road to a state championship starts in Toledo for the Stephenville Honeybees who take their 20-17 record into bi-district with a matchup against Krum Tuesday at 8:00 PM at Aledo High School.
The Honeybees are on a hot streak posting 13 wins in their final 15 games this season and are currently ranked 20th in the Texas Girls Coaches Association Class 4-A poll.
Krum was a third-place finisher in District 8-4A and finished 18-11 on the season. One big factor that seems to play in Krum’s favor is they are 9-1 at neutral sites.
Stephenville has been maturing as the season has progressed and not even two setbacks against #3 Glen Rose in district play has dampened the Honeybee’s fire. The Honeybees are an “attack-from-all-angles” offense and the numbers back it up with five players with 30 or more kills this season.
Jayci Morton has led the attackers with 73 kills while Chloe Goodman has notched 59. Freshman Landri Withers has been a welcome addition to the Honeybees’ offense posting 33 kills while Jaydi Griffin had 32 and Salette Rios and Alee McLendon recorded 30.
When it comes to the Honeybees’ defense, Gabie Lucero has come up big in her role as the team’s Libero player with 118 digs, and she’s gotten some great support with Morton’s 73, Hannah Huckabee (53) and Karlee Easterling with 50.
None of those regular season statistics will mean a thing tonight as Stephenville has to avoid looking past Krum and stay focused on each point they score. A win would put the Bees into a match against either Big Spring or Graham.
The opposite side of Stephenville’s playoff bracket also includes Greenwood, Burkburnett, Decatur and Godley.
