No. 10 Tarleton continues winning ways with sweep at Western New Mexico

SILVER CITY, N.M. – Tarleton extended its winning streak to 24 Friday night as the No. 10 TexAnns handled Western New Mexico in straight sets.

The match opened with Western New Mexico hanging close as Tarleton held a slim lead over the first 25 points before the Mustangs answered back to tie things up at 15-15. While Tarleton maintained an advantage, Western New Mexico forced extra points by tying the score at 24-24 before a kill from Elizabeth Muliaga and a block from Tatyana Tualii-Umi and Sofia Tonga secured the opening set for Tarleton.

In the next set, Tarleton left no doubt as the No. 10 team in the country kept the Mustangs in single digits – the fourth set of 25 that Tarleton has held to single digits this year – en route to a 25-9 victory. The run was sparked by a 13-1 run to open the set, nine of which were served up by Hannah McManus.

Tarleton continued to roll in the final set, taking 12 of the first 19 points to build a 12-7 lead and then rolling to a 25-19 win for the sweep.

Amber Strange led Tarleton with 11 kills while Adriana Darthuy landed nine of her own on a .389 hit percentage. Blanca Izquierdo (18) and Kayla Brannon (14) paced the offense with 32 assists and led the TexAnns to a .287 team hitting percentage while Hannah McManus and Adrianna Knutson led the team with 10 digs each.

Tarleton will look to complete a flawless run through Lone Star Conference play tomorrow at 3:30 p.m. when the TexAnns visit UT Permian Basin in Odessa. The TexAnns will then be back home next week to host the Lone Star Conference Championship Tournament.
