TexAnns open Lone Star Conference action with rout of Kingsville

STEPHENVILLE – Tarleton got league action started on a positive note Thursday night in Wisdom Gym as the TexAnns won their fifth game of the young season with a 60-44 rout of Texas A&M-Kingsville.

Kingsville came out swinging to the tune of a 14-11 lead in the first five minutes of the game, but Tarleton’s Destiney Winkfield turned the game upside down with a coast-to-coast steal and layup to start a 7-0 run over the rest of the quarter and send the game into the second period with the TexAnns on top 18-14.

After the Javelinas clawed back to tie things up at 20-20, Tarleton once again pulled away late in the quarter when Kaylee Allen got a floater to fall in the paint to fire up the TexAnn offense late in the opening half. The Allen bucket put Tarleton on top for good and started a 15-2 run over the rest of the half to send the TexAnns into the break leading 35-22.

Out of the break, Mackenzie Hailey scored the first three buckets to extend the lead out to 41-22. Over the rest of the third, Kingsville pulled as close as 15 but Tarleton would keep the lead at 19 heading into the fourth quarter. Tarleton cruised in the final quarter, leading by no less than 13 and as many as 21 to take the win.

For the game, Tarleton shot .432 from the floor while holding the Javelinas to a .333 clip for the game. The biggest difference came at the free throw line where Tarleton was 20-29 for .690 percentage while Kingsville was 8-21 for a .381 mark.

Kaylee Allen, the reigning LSC Offensive and Defensive Player of the Week, continued her hot start to the season with a team-high 18 points on 5-10 shooting to go along with four steals, three rebounds, and an assist. Hailey also filled up the stat sheet as the junior from Burleson scored 16 points of her own on 7-10 shooting with a team-high seven rebounds to go along with two steals, two blocks, and an assist.

Katie Webster also cracked double figures with 11 points while Winkfield and McKinley Bostad each scored five points. Kandyn Faurie (2), Nina Alvarez (2), and Laraveun Randle (1) rounded out the Tarleton scoring.

Tarleton will return to action back in Wisdom Gym Saturday at 2 p.m. against Angelo State in Lone Star Conference action. Saturday will be ‘Toys for Kids’ Day at Wisdom Gym. Anyone who brings a new, unwrapped toy donation will receive free admission.
