Stephenville’s Honeybees showed why they are the number 6 team in Class 4A and improved to 15-3 on the young season with a decisive 55-44 win against Wylie’s Lady Bulldogs at Gandy Gym Tuesday night.
Just like in their game against Midlothian Heritage last week the Bees jumped out front 17-7 in the first quarter and stayed on top by ten more points most of the night.
Every time the Lady Bulldogs tried to get a run going the Bees had the answer with a steal or an answering bucket.
In the first half, Autumn Nichols popped a pair of three-pointers while Kassidy Nowak hit from around the court with a three-pointer and eight first-quarter points. Sophomore
Coach Alan Thorpe elected to slow down the pace in the second quarter as the Bees came out showing off their passing game.
The move was frustrating for the Lady Bulldogs who needed to score to stay within striking distance for the win. When Wylie managed to pull to within six points and the score 19-13 – Thorpe let the reins go, and Stephenville moved out front 26-18 at the half.
The second half of the contest was much like the first with the Bees keeping Wylie at Bay and never letting their lead slip under six points the remainder of the way.
McClendon’s 15 points led the Bees scoring while Nowak had 10, Madison Gilder 5, Hannah Bernays 7, Nichols 11, Mikayla Diaz 7.
Editor’s Note: Stephenville will be taking a nine-day break before opening play in the What-a-Burger tournament on December 27. The Bees will begin district play January 4 against Mineral Wells at home and travel to January for what may be their biggest game of the year against Glen Rose.
The Lady Tigers are ranked third in Class 4A which means a battle of state-ranked teams with Stephenville currently number six and looking to move up.
