TexAnns blast East Texas Baptist 74-47 in pre-conference tune-up

STEPHENVILLE – Tarleton returned to game action Saturday with an exhibition bout against East Texas Baptist and wasted no time in returning to form with a 74-47 win over the Tigers.

The game does not count toward the overall record of either team but featured a battle of top teams in their respective divisions. Tarleton entered the game with a record of 8-2 while East Texas Baptist, an NCAA Division III powerhouse, came into the contest at 10-1.

Kaylee Allen got the afternoon started by turning a Tiger turnover into a Tarleton triple to start a 10-0 TexAnn run over the opening three minutes. Allen started and finished the 10-0 run with three-pointers while Katie Webster and Mackenzie Hailey chipped in buckets in between.

After ETBU got on the board at 5:25 to pull within eight, Tarleton answered back with five unanswered points to extend the lead back to 13. Tarleton would close out the quarter with a 14-point edge at 19-5.

Tarleton refused to let off the gas pedal in the second quarter as Hailey and McKinley Bostad quickly scored the first five points of the new quarter. Those points started a 12-5 run that extend Tarleton’s lead out to 21 at 31-10 with five minutes left in the half. The teams traded buckets the rest of the way and Tarleton went into the break with a 38-18 advantage.

ETBU came out of the half and pulled within 15 over the first two minutes, but Hailey ended the run with a fast-break bucket that started an 11-0 Tarleton run that put the TexAnns up 26 at 51-25. Tarleton would never again lead by less than 20 en route to the exhibition victory.

Mackenzie Hailey led the TexAnns with a 22-point, 11-rebound performance to go along with six steals. Kaylee Allen also poured in 13 points while Katie Webster (9) and McKinley Bostad (7) combined for 16 more points in the starting five. Destiney Winkfield led the bench scoring with eight points while Kandyn Faurie (5), Marissa Escamilla (5), Hannah Hyde (2), Nina Alvarez (2), and LaRaveun Randle (1) rounded out the scoring.

Tarleton will return to regular season action on Thursday in Lawton, Oklahoma against Cameron at 5:30 p.m. for Lone Star Conference play.
