Three Texans top 20 points in victory over Wiley

STEPHENVILLE – Tarleton men’s basketball closed out 2018 in style with a 94-79 win over NAIA No. 13 Wiley to run its winning streak to four games on Saturday in Wisdom Gym.

The Texans had three players top 20 points in the game, led by Josh Hawley who had 23 points – his fourth straight 20-point game. Corinthian Ramsey and Randall Broddie each scored 20 points on the night.

Tarleton (10-2) had its second straight 20-assists effort as a team and also had a season-low 10 turnovers. The 20 assists led to the Texans shooting 56 percent from the floor and 50 percent on 3-pointers (12-24). Ramsey led all players with seven assists while Sam Marshall dished out a career-high six assists to go with five points and three rebounds.

The Texans led 11-8 through the first five minutes of the game before going on a 7-0 run for a double-digit advantage. Jesse Hill sank two of his 13 points on a layup to start 10-0 stretch by the Texans that featured back-to-back 3s from Marshall and Preston Enloe to put the Texans up 28-11 with 10 minutes left in the opening half.

Hawley, who had 18 of his 23 points in the first half, had a stretch of seven straight points to close out the first half, which the Texans led 53-41 at the break. Hawley finished with a team-leading eight rebounds to go with five steals and three assists. Hawley leads the Lone Star Conference in scoring (17.5) and rebounds (10.4) per game this season.

The second half score remained at double-digits for the Texans and the lead grew to as much as 19 on Ramsey’s fourth 3-pointer of the game with 11:43 to go. Wiley, who was led by Joshua Hamilton’s 34 points, cut the deficit to nine with seven minutes left, but the Texans closed the game out with scoring runs of 7-0 and 8-2 for its seventh double-digit win of the season.

The Texan starting lineup scored 81 of the team’s 94 points but had scoring efforts off the bench from Isaiah Boling (6 points) Clashon Gaffney (3), Preston Enloe (3) and Brandon Goldsmith (1).

Tarleton will return to Lone Star Conference play on the road against Cameron in Lawton, Oklahoma on Thursday, Jan. 3 at 7:30 p.m.
