The much-anticipated matchup between #13 Stephenville and District 7-4A rival #12 Glen Rose lived up to its billing as the Honeybees dug themselves out of a first-half hole and topped the Lady Tigers 38-31 on the road Tuesday night.
Stephenville (18-6, 2-0) prepared for the district season with tough opponents and had narrow losses against a pair of number one teams in Nazareth and Levelland. Down the stretch that preparation is starting to pay off.

“We were a little off at the first of the game,” coach Alan Thorpe said. “The basketball goal kind of seems likes it’s just out there in space with the way the seating falls back in their gym.”
Glen Rose (23-5, 0-2) seized early control of the game hitting a three-pointer to open the contest and then connecting on a trio of free throws and connecting on a four-point play that helped put them out top 17-10 after the first quarter.

While the Lady Tigers’ defense did throw the Honeybees off their game a little in the second quarter Stephenville’s offense began to surge despite some turnovers. Jayci Morton scored five of her game-high 10 points while Madison Gilder added four to get the Bees within striking distance at the half 22-21
“We made some mistakes out there and could have gotten Hannah Bernays the ball underneath a few times, and we didn’t,” Thorpe said. “That’s not to take anything away from Glen Rose’s defense. They played a great game and played us man-to-man.”

Bernay’s sank the only three-pointer of the night for the Honeybees when she went on a seven-point tear in the third quarter, and Stephenville went on top to stay and stretched their lead out to nine points 35-26 in the fourth quarter.
At 2-0 in district play, the Honeybees are in the driver’s seat and are likely to move up in the next Texas Girl’s Coaches Association poll.
Scoring—Madison Gilder 5, Kassidy Nowak, 4, Hannah Bernays 9, Jayci Morton 10, Makayla Diaz 2, Alee McClendon5, Autumn Nichols 3.
