Second-half woes haunt No. 23 Tarleton at No. 24 Commerce

COMMERCE – Tarleton shot .259 from the floor and were outrebounded 25-15 in the second half Thursday night as the No. 23 Texans fell to No. 24 Texas A&M-Commerce 76-64 at The Field House.

Commerce came out of the gate and jumped out to a quick 8-0 lead in the first 3:23 before a Corinthian Ramsey layup got the Texans on the board and started a 20-11 run that saw Tarleton take its first lead of the game with 6:26 left in the opening half. Josh Hawley put the Texans on top with a three-pointer and Richie Mitchell extended it to three on the next possession with a layup off a turnover.

After Commerce tied it back up with a three ball, Hawley struck again from deep to start an 8-0 Tarleton surge that ultimately extended out to a 17-6 run over the rest of the half to send the Texans into the locker room holding onto a 39-28 lead.

Out of the break, Tarleton maintained a double-digit lead over the first 5:35 before Commerce started a game-ending 36-14 run over the final 14:25 of the game. In the second half, Tarleton was 7-27 shooting from the floor, including 2-17 from downtown, while the Lions shot .529 from the field.

For the game, Josh Hawley recorded his seventh double-double of the season with 19 points and 13 rebounds on 7-14 shooting from the field, including 3-7 from downtown. Ramsey also scored 14 points for Tarleton, including seven from the free throw line.

Randall Broddie (8), Sam Marshall (9), and Jesse Hill (5) combined for 22 points to round out the starting five for Tarleton while Brandon Goldsmith (2), Isaiah Boling (2), Clashon Gaffney (1), and Mitchell (4) rounded out the scoring for the Texans.

The Texans will return home Saturday afternoon for a 4 p.m. game in Wisdom Gym against Dallas Christian
