Ramsey’s 27 points lead Texans over Mustangs for seventh straight time

STEPHENVILLE – Tarleton men’s basketball won its seventh straight game over MSU Texas with an 82-73 victory on Thursday in Wisdom Gym.

The Texans improve to 17-6 overall and 7-5 in the Lone Star Conference while MSU Texas falls to 6-16 and 2-10 in conference. The Texans also swept the Mustangs for the third straight season.

Tonight marked the first LSC home game for the Texans since Dec. 1 after a five-game conference road trip and the Texans were more than happy to be back on their home court, especially senior guard Corinthian Ramsey. Ramsey scored a season-high 27 points on 5-9 shooting from 3-point range in the win.

The two rivals traded bucket for bucket in the first 10 minutes of play to the tune of an 18-18 tie. The Texans offense picked up from there, going on a 12-2 run with buckets from five different players, including 3-pointers from Ramsey and Brandon Goldsmith, for a double-digit lead at 30-20. The Texans led 38-28 at the break, where they now improve to 15-4 on the year when leading at half.

Josh Hawley, who had 16 points, nine rebounds and tied a career high with five steals, opened the second half with a 3-pointer for a 41-28 lead. The Mustangs, however, chipped into the lead and cut the deficit to four with 15 minutes left in the game. Tarleton responded with another run to pull ahead, this time a 13-1 run for the game’s biggest lead at 16 with 8:23 to go. The Texans would go on to lead by at least nine the rest of the way

Jesse Hill had a big second half to help lift the Texans as the senior forward connected on all five shots for 10 points and finished with 18 points and seven rebounds. Hill’s flawless shooting in the second half was part of the Texans’ 58 percent shooting in the second half. Ramsey, Hill and Hawley combined for 61 of the team’s 82 points.

Randall Broddie posted seven points while Brandon Goldsmith had six points and five rebounds. Richie Mitchell also had six points to go with a team-leading four assists and Clashon Gaffney had two points.

Tarleton will continue its five-game homestand with a matchup with Cameron on Saturday, Feb. 9 at 4 p.m. in Wisdom Gym.
