SAN ANTONIO – Saturday was quite the day for Tarleton Softball.
Originally scheduled to play a 10 a.m. and 2:30 p.m. doubleheader against New Mexico Highlands and Regis, the rain came, fields were deemed unplayable and two teams departed the St. Mary’s College Classic.
Tarleton was told to play Highlands at noon. Then told to play Regis at 6 p.m. an hour away at Texas Lutheran. Then told to stay put in San Antonio to play Regis at 6:30 p.m.
When the TexAnns finally took the field against Regis, it only lasted into the middle of the fifth inning.
Despite all the obstacles, nothing would stop Tarleton from continuing their winning streak Saturday afternoon. The TexAnns were leading 9-3 as the home team when the game was called in the middle of the fifth, marking the completion of an official game and the eighth straight win for the TexAnns.
Jordan Withrow was absolutely dealing from the circle.
The junior All-American came up one strikeout short of tying her career-high and program single-game record for strikeouts (13) as Withrow punched out 12 in five innings of work en route to her second win of the season.
She kept Regis off the board for the first four innings while the offense picked her up in the bottom of the fourth with a nine-run inning.
Tarleton loaded the bases on two walks and a bunt single to begin the inning before Morgan Ling got Tarleton on the board with a RBI single. Back-to-back bases-loaded walks from Kadyn Kirkpatrick and Amber Conner extended the lead out to 3-0 before Georgia Capell cashed in a pair with a two-run double for a 5-0 lead.
The TexAnns added four more in the inning on a wild pitch, an error, an RBI single from Destiny Crumpley and a bases-loaded walk from Kristen Zuehl to cap off the nine-run inning.
Regis got on the board with a bases-clearing, two-out double in the fifth before Withrow finished off the fifth with her 12th strikeout of the game – clearing the official game mark.
Karli Herron led the team in hits with two while Capell was the RBI leader with two. Capell, Crumpley, Ling, and Kirkpatrick had one hit each to complete the six-hit effort. Crumpley, Ling, Zuehl, Kirkpatrick, and Conner had one RBI each.
Tarleton is scheduled to continue through the St. Mary’s College Classic tomorrow. Opponents and game times are to be determined after Drury left the tournament due to weather.
