WEARTHERFORD–The offense went off track a couple of times with turnovers but Stephenville was just as quick to steal the ball back on defense and the Honeybees (28-7) dropped Krum 42-27 for a Bi-District championship win in Weatherford Monday night.

“We knew they were a good team from having seen the videos we had on them,” coach Alan Thorpe said. “ I thought our defense played really good for most of the game.”
Stephenville held Krum to just two-second quarter points and that basket came off a blown defensive assignment with 28 seconds left in the quarter. The Bees allowed just four points in the final quarter and the Lady Bobcats only spark came in the third quarter where they outscored Stephenville 13-10.

For most of the first half, Stephenville worked the ball inside to post Alee McClendon who scored seven of her nine points in the half. Krum’s counter on defense was to double and triple team on defense and sticking too tightly to the game plan resulted in turnovers.
“We’re not really good at math yet,” Thorpe teased. “Hopefully that’s something we will get better at that because we were wide open on the back side.”
Stephenville was up 31-13 in the third quarter when seven turnovers led to a 10-0 run by Krum to make it 31-21 and as Thorpe described it “the coaching staff was losing its mind over turnovers.”
“I’m glad to get out of here with a win. I was worried about a little rust after not having played a game in 11 days,” Thorpe said.
Things weren’t all that bad as Stephenville rallied in the fourth quarter with Hannah Bernays providing four of the Bees’ eight fourth-quarter points. Bernays also led the first quarter scoring with five points including Bees’ opening score with a three-pointer that turned out to be Stephenville’s only lone range success of the night.

Jaci Morton led all scorers with 14 hard-earned points as Krum continually collapsed on her, and she responded at the free throw line with 8-9 shooting.
Scoring–Madison Gilder 2, Kassidy Nowak 2, Hannah Bernays 13, Jaci Morton 14, Landry Withers 2, Alee McClendon 9, Jettie Funderburgh 1.
Stephenville will take to the road again Thursday with an area championship on the line against Graham at Mineral Wells High School at 6:30 p.m.
