STEPHENVILLE – Freshman Sofjia Hrovat has earned her first Lone Star Conference honor after being named the league’s Women’s Tennis Athlete of the Week Thursday.

After dropping a pair of matches last weekend, Tarleton headed to San Antonio for three matches Monday through Wednesday including top-20 matchups against No. 4 Hawaii Pacific and No. 18 Southwest Baptist. Hrovat, who didn’t play in the losses over the weekend, stepped into the No. 6 role and was vital to three straight victories including a pair of national upsets.

In Monday’s match, Hrovat delivered a 6-3, 7-6 victory over HPU’s Jayme Waites to bring the match with the Sharks back to an even 3-3 after HPU won the doubles point. Tarleton would go on to win the match 4-3. The following day, Tarleton once again fell behind in the match 2-0 to No. 18 Southwest Baptist and Hrovat recorded the first point of the morning for Tarleton with a 6-0, 6-1 win over Emma Davis to spark a run of four straight singles points to deliver the win for Tarleton. On day three, she paired with Nathalie Ulander to win the No. 3 doubles position for Tarleton and give Tarleton the doubles advantage, which ultimately turned into a 5-2 victory for Tarleton over Auburn-Montgomery.

Prior to last week, Hrovat had been primarily the team’s No. 7 player with just one singles and three doubles appearances this season.

Hrovat joins Shelby Fillingame to earn an LSC weekly award this season.

Tarleton will return to action next Friday, March 22 at 2 p.m. in Lone Star Conference action against UT Permian Basin in Stephenville.
