Mesa’s walk-off lifts Tarleton to doubleheader split against Cameron Friday

STEPHENVILLE – Tarleton’s Zach Mesa delivered a walk-off single in extra innings of game one to lead Tarleton to a doubleheader split in the Lone Star Conference series opener against Cameron Friday.

Game 1: Tarleton 3, Cameron 2 (8)

Zach Mesa delivered a walk-off single in the bottom of the eighth to drive in Dexter Pruitt and start Tarleton off with a 1-0 mark in conference play Friday afternoon.

Colby Seltzer wasted no time in putting Tarleton on the board as the freshman launched a lead-off home run to left center to put Tarleton on top 1-0. Two innings later, the Texans added one more on an infield single from Jon Law that plated Tyler Fowler from third for a 2-0 edge.

Brian Archibald was dealing from the mound once again as the senior right-hander allowed just one run over 5.2 innings of work. He danced out of trouble in the fifth when Cameron plated one and had runners on second and third. Archibald got a strikeout on a full-count to end the inning and keep Tarleton on top 2-1.

Archibald struck out seven in his 5.2 innings of work.

Cameron would claw back to tie the game at 2-2 in the top of the seventh to force extra innings. Tarleton’s Jon Law led off the top of the eighth with a double to the left center gap then his pinch-runner, Dexter Pruitt, moved to third on a fly ball to left.

Zach Mesa stepped up and delivered the walk-off single over the head of Cameron’s two-man outfield to plate Pruitt and put Tarleton in the win column.

Brett Gilchrist earned the win for Tarleton in relief with 1.1 innings of work.

Law led the offense with a 2-3 day at the dish with an RBI. Colby Seltzer, Tyler Fowler, Jordan Parker, Mesa, and Jacob Walker had one hit each to round out the scoring.

Game 2: Cameron 20, Tarleton 0 (7)

Tarleton suffered a loss in the second game of Friday’s doubleheader. The Texans lost 20-1 and Sam Scarborough supplied a seventh-inning single for the team’s only hit of the game.

The Texans’ lone run of the game came in the seventh inning when Hunter Thomas coaxed a one-out walk and moved to third Scarborough’s single. He came in to score on a passed ball.

The series will resume tomorrow with a 1 p.m. doubleheader, weather permitting.
