STEPHENVILLE – Despite suffering two losses in the regular season finale Sunday, Tarleton locked themselves in as the No. 6 seed in next week’s Lone Star Conference Championship Tournament.

Tarleton secured the final berth despite losing the first game of the twin bill when Eastern New Mexico lost their third game of their series at Texas A&M-Kingsville. Tarleton will take on No. 3-seed Texas A&M-Kingsville in the LSC Tournament in Canyon on Thursday at 3 p.m. The tournament traditionally is hosted the league’s champion, but a schedule conflict for Fosters Field in San Angelo will prevent Angelo State from hosting.

Game 1: UT Permian Basin 12, Tarleton 8

Tarleton took a 6-1 lead after the second inning but surrendered a seven spot in the ensuing half inning and never recovered as UT Permian Basin took the first game of the doubleheader 12-8.

After UT Permian Basin got on the board in the first inning, Tarleton’s offense exploded with a six-run second inning that got started when Sam Scarborough drove home two on a single up the middle. Jacob Walker made it a 3-1 lead with an RBI single to plate Scarborough and then Blake Burns answered with the inning’s biggest blast – a three-run double to left field.

The Falcons responded with a seven-run top of the third to take an 8-6 lead.

Tyler Parker added a no-doubt solo home run in the third and Jake Spence drove in Dexter Pruitt with an RBI double in the seventh but it wasn’t enough to overcome the deficit, which was extended with two runs in the sixth and seventh.

Burns and Scarborough each had two base hits on the day and combined for five RBI. Walker, Colby Seltzer, Jordan Parker, Tyler Parker, Spence and Zach Mesa had one hit each for Tarleton. Connor Flanagan, Michael Pilato, Ty Jones and Jon Law combined for the work on the mound and struck out seven.

Game 2: UT Permian Basin 15, Tarleton 6

An eight-run sixth inning for the Falcons proved too much to overcome as Tarleton suffered a doubleheader sweep against UT Permian Basin Sunday afternoon.

Tarleton came out swinging early three RBI from Jordan Parker in the first two innings – an RBI single in the first and a two-run single in the second – and an RBI double from Tyler Parker in the third. Meanwhile, the Falcons could muster only one run as the Texans built a 4-1 lead through the first four innings.

Tarleton extended the lead out to 5-1 with an RBI single from Tyler Fowler in the fifth to make it a 5-1 game, but UT Permian Basin answered with their eight-run sixth inning to take a 9-5 lead. The Texans scored one more on an RBI fielder’s choice in the sixth while the Falcons added six over the next two innings to pull away 15-6. Tarleton plated one more in the ninth on an RBI walk from Tyler Parker.

Tyler Fowler paced the Texan offense with four hits while Jordan Parker and Walker had two. Spence, Tyler Parker, Scarborough and Dylan Antonelli had one hit each.

Hunter Thomas pitched the first 5.1 innings and allowed three runs – two earned – on four hits while striking out nine. Case Rolen, Chris Reed, Zach Svensson, Mitchell Morris and Ty Windham finished the game on the mound.

Tarleton will compete in the LSC Tournament Championship in Canyon on Thursday. Stay tuned to TarletonSports.com for exact details.
