STEPHENVILLE (May 12, 2019) — Tarleton State University College of Health Sciences and Human Services Associate Dean Julie Merriman delivered an invited presentation at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in Atlanta, Ga., May 7.
Dr. Merriman presented preliminary results from a strategic planning session for CDC and healthcare systems leaders in November. The session was focused on advancing domestic tuberculosis elimination and provided insights expected to be reflected in national health policy in the coming years.
Merriman led faculty from Tarleton’s Counseling, Medical Laboratory Sciences and Public Health departments at the session, which was organized by Tarleton alumnus and tuberculosis researcher Thad Miller with the University of North Texas Health Science Center in Fort Worth.
“It was truly an honor to represent Tarleton as I presented to such a prestigious group of scholars and researchers,” Merriman said. “I believe addressing the mental health of those affected by TB and latent TB could have a huge impact on their quality of life.”
The College of Health Sciences and Human Services was founded in fall 2016 to graduate students “with the highest academic achievement who are dedicated to improving the health of the communities they serve,” said Dr. Sally Lewis, interim CHSHS dean.
The college also was charged with supporting “innovative, cross-discipline initiatives” that support the mission. Lewis said Merriman exemplifies this with her leadership in UNTHSC’s CDC tuberculosis project conducted by Dr. Miller.
