Mary Alice (Grimes) Batchelor of Stephenville passed away Friday, June 21, 2019 in Stephenville.

Funeral services will be at 11:00AM, Friday, June 28, 2019 at Stephenville Funeral Home with burial to follow at Lingleville East End Cemetery. The family will host a visitation one hour prior to the service, beginning at 9:00AM.

Mary Alice (Grimes) Batchelor was born November 28, 1929, to Joseph Marvin and Alice Belle (O’Neal) Grimes, in rural Ellis County. She lived most of her life in Stephenville, attending school in Rocky Point, Victor, Cordel OK, Tolar and Stephenville. She graduated with the Stephenville High School Class of 1948 and attended a business college in Des Moines, IA. She served for a brief time in the Naval Air Reserved as an x-ray technician. Mary became a pioneer in the computer industry as a programmer and manager with General Electric and the University Computer Company. She was trained for NASA where she had the opportunity to witness three space launches. She was co-owner of Scott Instruments and Scott Real Estate, managing several apartment complexes in the Dallas and Denton area before moving back to Stephenville. 

Mary was a world traveler. Visiting several countries, she always made a point of experiencing the ultimate adventures, and making lasting friendships. Mary joined the Peace Corps in 1993 and was a teacher in Western Samoa for two years. She also participated in Earth Watch projects in Thailand and Canada, and was an advocate for animals’ rights.

Mary was a member of Graham Street Church of Christ, Cedar Point Quilting Club and Lap Swimmers Club. She was also a driver for the American Cancer Society. She enjoyed spending time with family and friends, and helping out wherever needed.

Survivors include several nieces and nephews who considered her their “second mother and grandmother”: Roy David McCoy, Brent McCoy and Shawn McCoy of Granbury; Jerree Herrington and Lacy Gilley of Stephenville; Marla Vineyard of Bridgeport; Greg Herrington of Amarillo; and their spouses, children and grandchildren. Other nieces and nephews include Kathy Grimes of Burnett, Steve Grimes of Austin, Joe Grimes of Sulfur OK, Leslie Wooden of Chico CA, Allyson Miles of Lenexa KS, Debbie Alms of Brunsville MN, Bunny Steinmetz of Des Moines IA, Shelly and Barbara Blunt of Whitney. 

Mary was preceded in death by her parents, sister Marjy Ruth McCoy and her husband; brothers, J.M., Redis, and Bob Grimes, their wives, and one grandnephew Joseph Floyd (Joey) McCoy in 1996. A brother, Ulna Barton Grimes died as an infant.
