Baylor pledge Clay Johnston rushed for 177 yards and two touchdowns and the Abilene Wylie defense did the rest in a 21-7 win over Stephenville at Tarleton’s Memorial Stadium Friday night.
Wylie clinched the outright 3-4A Division I title with the win, while Stephenville finishes third behind Big Spring and ahead of Brownwood. All four advance to the playoffs, with Stephenville set to meet 4-4A Division I runner-up Decatur at 7:30 p.m. next Friday in Mineral Wells.
Anthony Chavarria was again effective in the place of injured Texas Tech commit Jarrett Stidham. Chavarria was 19-30 passing for 249 yards. That included hitting sophomore running back kaegun Williams eight times for 87 yards. Williams also rushed for 76 yards, giving him 153 total offensive yards on 24 touches.
Reserve running back Nico Madrid, a recent addition to the varsity roster, had Stephenville’s lone touchdown run late in the fourth quarter. Josh Nowell had 85 receiving yards.
J.T. Carey passed for 110 yards and a touchdown for Wylie. Carey connected with Josiah Light for a 5-yard TD and a 14-0 lead early in the third. Johnston, who also had 70 yards receiving, began the scoring in the first and finished it with the knock out blow in the fourth.
