The Stephenville FAITH Knights continue to carry the banner of one of the county’s most promising teams this season. The 8-time State Championship program is comprised of homeschool students throughout Erath County and this year’s team is looking to keep the winning tradition alive and well.
The Knights (3-0) are off to a strong start, beating teams like the Walnut Springs Hornets (1-2), by more than 50 points – 83-39 last week. Or two weeks ago when, after a bit of a slow start against a scrappy Three Way Braves team (0-2), the Knights came back after the half and completely dominated, defeating the Braves, 52-34.
Last week the Knights traveled to Walnut Springs and against the Hornets, FAITH’s #7 Travis Robertson (Jr.) completed 5 of 9 for 93 yards, a touchdown and an interception. Robertson’s main receiver was #22 Preston Hyde (Jr.) who caught the ball 3 times for 47 yards and 2 touchdowns, while his senior targets were #8 Matthew Gardner twice for 55 yards and #31 Elijah Swindell for 6 yards. Robertson was also the Knight’s leading rusher with 29 carries for 643 yards and a whooping 8 touchdowns. Gardner also carried the ball five yards for another TD.
On defense against Walnut Springs, Gardner had 3 sacks and 4 tackles and 11 assists, while Swindell had 18 assists and 5 solo tackles and Hyde had two tackles for loss of yards and an interception.
Two weeks ago, FAITH took on another local team, the Three Way Braves, but showed little mercy for their fellow Erath County boys.
Once again, Robertson was at the helm, completing 8 of 14 for 100 yards, a touchdown and an interception. His main targets were Gardner, who caught 3 passes for 95 yards and sophomore Gilbert Gwassa #18, who caught the ball once for a 10 yard completion.
Robertson carried the ball 26 times for 274 yards and 5 touchdowns against the Braves, while Swindell ran the ball twice for 21 yards in Three Way.
Defense was strong against the Braves as the Knights were able to make some halftime adjustments and keep Three Way from continuing the momentum they attempted to build with a couple of bigger runs in the first half. Once again Gardner had a big defensive night, with a massive 30 yard interception returned for a touchdown, 11 solo tackles and 9 assists, while Gwassa got 4 assists and 5 solo tackles, 3 were for loss of yards.
The Knights are on the road again this week, traveling to Keene on Friday, Sept. 16, to face off against the Chargers (1-2) at 7:30 p.m. Keene is coming off a bad 56-0 loss last week to Abbott (3-0).
