STEPHENVILLE (November 22, 2014) — Timely 3-point shooting by Raven McGrath and Meagan O’Dell helped lift Tarleton State (2-1) to a 78-70 win over Texas Wesleyan (6-3) at Wisdom Gym Saturday night.

McGrath and O’Dell were each 5-8 from outside the arc and Tarleton knocked down 12 total 3-pointers in the win. The TexAnns led the rest of the way after breaking open a 24-24 tie with 11 straight points late in the first half.

O’Dell and McGrath scored 15 points each to lead Tarleton, while Ikpeaku Iwobi doubled up with 13 points and 10 rebounds. Karli Moore just missed a double-double with 12 points and nine boards. Kathy Thomas scored nine.

The TexAnns shot 47 percent from the field and 48 percent from the arc, but still struggled at times against an equally balanced Wesleyan squad that owns an early season road victory over Division I Incarnate Word. Wesleyan had five double-digit scorers Saturday, led by Stacey Darnley with 18 points.

Kashyla Fields scored 13 for Wesleyan, Nolisa Onyesonam and Caitlin Boal each added 12 and Katelynn Threats had 11. Onyesonam grabbed nine boards including five on the offensive end. Wesleyan hit the offensive glass 18 times and out-rebounded Tarleton 42-36.

Wesleyan triples by Darnley and Cheyenne Swoopes, followed by a Swooopes free throw cut Tarleton’s lead to 55-52 with 7:37 left, and it was 58-55 moments later.

McGrath answered with a Tarleton 3-ball for a six-point lead, and as soon as Wesleyan pulled within four, Bailey Wipff and O’Dell buried back-to-back long balls to make it 69-59 with 5:15 remaining.

Iwobi began Tarleton’s big first half run with a  basket in the paint. Booklyn Garcia scored all of her six points in the run, and O’Dell hit a 3-pointer and assisted on one of Garcia’s buckets.

Tarleton travels to Lubbock Christian for classic play next weekend. The TexAnns face Lubbock Christian at 7:30 p.m. Friday and Texas-Permian Basin at 5:30 p.m. Saturday, both at the Rip Griffin Center.
