(November 25, 2014) — Tarleton State has safely navigated its opening three games of the season, and on Tuesday jumped into the top 10 as its reward.
The Texans moved up four spots to No. 8 in this week’s National Association of Basketball Coaches top 25 poll. They return to action in the inaugural Tarleton Thanksgiving Classic Friday and Saturday at Wisdom Gym. The Texans face Pittsburg State (Kan.) then Northwest Nazarene (Idaho), both at 7 p.m.
Tarleton owns two victories over Division II and South Central Region foes, defeating New Mexico Highlands, 72-52, and Lubbock Christian, 65-61, in the Whataburger Texan Tipoff Classic November 14-15. The Texans slammed National Christian College Athletic Association member Dallas Christian 88-58 last Saturday.
A potential top 10 matchup looms ahead when the Texans travel to Las Vegas for the South Point Holiday Hoop Classic in December. They are slated to face Drury (Mo.), which leaped three spots to No. 4 this week. The top three remain West Liberty (W.Va.), Southern Connecticut State and Metropolitan State (Colo.).
No. 5 is Bellarmine (Ky.), No. 6 Florida Southern and No. 7 Indian (Pa.). Rounding out the top 10 behind Tarleton are No. 9 Colorado-Colorado Springs and No. 10 Central Missouri, the reigning national champion that somehow went unranked in the preseason poll.
Tarleton is outscoring foes by 18 points per game. Mo Lee leads the Texans with 13.3 points per game, followed by Michael Hardge and Davene Carter with 11 each. Lee averages 6.7 rebounds and Carter is collecting six per game. Lee also leads the team with nine assists.
