U.S. Veteran

On December 29, 2014 in Austin Texas, Burl Belvin Spurlock, 85, drifted peacefully into the arms of God.

Funeral Services will be held on Saturday, January 3, 2015 at 2:00 PM at the Stephenville Funeral Home Chapel.

The youngest son of Samuel and Lorena Spurlock came into this world on November 22, 1929 in Brown County, Texas. He was a man of great inner strength, courage, and character; a kind, patient, and wise man with an incredible love of life. A sincere man with the honest ability to make you feel valued and loved; and just a little smarter, a little kinder and caring in his presence; just a little happier. He had a way of bringing forth the best version of those around him. With him, everything came from and through a place of love. His last years were altered by Alzheimer’s, but his essence never faded. Inside was always present the light of joy and kindness with an abundance of smiles. He was a good man.

Burl grew up in Brown County the youngest of 6 children, served his country in the Korean War where he was awarded the Purple Heart medal, came home and married his love Wanda Warnock. The two then moved to Lake Jackson where he began his career with Dow Chemical, and started a family with the birth of their daughter Regina. They lived in Lake Jackson building happy memories in this coastal town until his retirement when he and Wanda then moved to Stephenville. There, the two of them enjoyed many years close to family and friends. In 2007, Wanda was called home and in 2009, Burl moved to Austin to live with his daughter and be close to his grandchildren.

Burl is survived by his daughter Regina, his 3 grandchildren Jhett, Olivia, and Madeline, and his sister Vonnie Guthrie. He leaves behind a loving and close family of in-laws, nieces, and nephews. He may be gone from our sight, but that is all. As those of us here wave him farewell, we find comfort in the knowledge that at the exact moment other eyes are watching him coming toward them with excitement as they say, hello again. This was but a small part of a much bigger journey.

The family asks that in lieu of flowers, you may wish to consider making a contribution in his honor to the Alzheimer’s Foundation. www.alzfdn.org.
