New Year, new plan

It’s the week after the holiday and, by now, all the presents have been opened and enjoyed, the family has come and gone, and our focus has changed from Christmas to New Year’s. As New Year’s Eve draws closer, many are planning their resolutions — getting in shape, paying off debt, quitting smoking and the list goes on and on.

But here’s a problem with that — those resolutions are more than likely broken before the last of the New Year’s party is cleaned up. So at The Flash, we propose something a bit different:

  • Make anti-resolutions in 2015
  • Let go of the past, forgive one another
  • Focus on the positives, not the negatives
Anti-Resolutions

Okay, it’s New Years and everyone is making resolutions, but those get broken, right? So, instead of putting all that energy into breaking a bad habit, The Flash is going to focus more on putting that effort into creating new, healthier habits. Or at least more fun habits!

For example, lots of people want to lose weight in the new year. What if, instead of trying some crazy new diet, we focused on eating better and being more active? A salad, not a burger. Frisbee golf in the Stephenville City Park, not a movie with candy, soda and popcorn.

Or, instead of resolutions, create a list of new things you want to do and try. The goal is to cross the new things off your list as you go throughout the year. Maybe you even add to the list as you think of more new things to try or places to visit. Here is a list of 52 new things to try – one for each week – and most are free and easily achievable locally!

Let go and forgive

Why waste anymore time and energy on the past? It’s happened, it cannot be changed and yet we waste so much worrying over it. No matter if you or someone else made the mistake — forgive one another and let’s all move on. How much energy could we give to better things, more fun experiences and happier times if we let go of the past.

God told the Israelites in Isaiah 43:18, “Forget the former things: do not dwell on the past.” Surely God has the right idea, no?

Or even the old proverb, “No matter how far you go down a wrong road, turn around, it is still better to correct the mis-steps than to continue making them.” Let’s spend 2015 making new friends, living each moment fully and truly enjoying our lives instead of focusing on hate.

Positives, not negatives

Many teach that one cannot move forward without letting go of our pasts and our mistakes and failures. In 2015, maybe we could all focus on the new and a chance to change those negatives into positives. Concentrate on the good things about your life.

In Philippians 4:8 Paul says, “Finally, brothers, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable—if anything is excellent or praiseworthy – think about such things.”

Seriously, let’s think about that.

Who needs more broke resolutions when we can have real solutions to create positive change in our lives? Not us, and not any of you either!

Let’s wake up each day being thankful for another chance to be you and love one another. Let’s try to let yesterday go, taking with us the good and leaving the bad behind every night. The new day brings with it the chance to do something new and positive in your life and in the community around you. Don’t let the negative hold you back from the greatness you are!
