STEPHENVILLE (January 5, 2015) — The Texas Education Agency (TEA) has awarded Region 13 Education Service Center, in partnership with Tarleton State University, a $300,000 contract to develop training materials for a new version of the Instructional Leadership Development Program for Campus Administrators.
Dr. Lauralee Pankonien, senior coordinator, Educator Quality at Region 13 ESC, and Dr. Don M. Beach, Texas A&M University System Regents Professor and Tarleton professor of Educational Leadership and Policy Studies, will put together a team to develop training and resources that will support principals as instructional leaders of their campuses.
‘Tarleton has one of the longest continuous partnerships with Texas schools through their Effective Schools Project, which began in 1988, and has had an ongoing relationship with Region 13 ESC in several collaborative projects,” said Beach. “We are delighted to be working with Region 13 once again on the ILD training materials that will prepare a new generation of administrators to lead Texas schools.”
The new Instructional Leadership Development (ILD) core strands focus on what have been called the “soft skills” of leadership. The ILD training is designed to support school leaders as they engage with teachers in prioritizing and focusing on curriculum and instruction, goal setting, and data gathering and analysis. The interactive skills of conferencing, conflict resolution, team building, and coaching and mentoring address the need to accomplish tasks through people.
“With a proven track record of successful leadership of all aspects of educator appraisal and leadership development, we think that a collaboration of ESC 13 and Tarleton State University is uniquely poised to move Texas forward to a dynamic new concept of ILD training,” said Beach. “The partnership will provide training that is grounded in the latest research and best practices along with addressing the practical nature of meeting the needs of current administrators in Texas schools.”
The development team will engage stakeholders to gather input with regard to skills and training resources and construct training modules that can be delivered to campus administrators as early as next fall. The prototype training session will be conducted in May or June.
