STEPHENVILLE (January 7, 2015) — Tarleton State University will host more than 200 members of the Texas State Guard (TXSG) conducting a training mission on and off the university campus the weekend of Jan. 9-11. The weekend will help prepare the TXSG’s response to natural disasters.
“The principal focus of our training at Tarleton this year is confidence training, team building and small unit leader development,” said Col. Howard Palmer, commander of the Fort Worth based 4th Regiment. “We will also be training and certifying selected soldiers on Level 1 Ground Search and Rescue procedures. This weekend’s training will better prepare our Guardsmen to respond to serious disasters, such as a tornado, to conduct search and rescue, damage assessment and mass care shelters.”
All components of the TXSG will be represented, making it one of the biggest training partnerships held at Tarleton. Guardsmen of 4th and 19th Civil Affairs Regiments, 4th Air Wing, 3rd Battalion Texas Maritime Regiment (TMAR) and 3rd Battalion Texas Medical Brigade, all headquartered in the greater Dallas-Fort Worth area, will be training. “Training with the units we will deploy with is a great step in making this a truly joint force,” said Col. Palmer.
TXSG members will use Tarleton facilities for confidence training, to conduct team-building exercises and enhance small unit leadership development.
“We appreciate the continued partnership of the city of Stephenville and the leadership and staff of Tarleton State University, which is once again playing an important role in our training,” said Col. Palmer. “The citizens of Stephenville have always been hospitable towards the Guard, and we appreciate their support.”
The exercise represents the fifth year that the Texas State Guard has conducted training on the Tarleton campus.
