Sport: STEPHENVILLE (January 9, 2014) — Tarleton State offensive coordinator Justin Carrigan will become the first head coach at Texas-Permian Basin.

Tarleton’s athletics department confirmed the news Friday afternoon after The Flash broke the story that morning thanks to a tip from a source with knowledge of the situation. UTPB held a press conference to announce the hiring Friday. Coverage of that is available at utpbfalcons.com.

“I believe Texas-Permian Basin has hired one of the best young coaches out of the Lone Star Conference,” said Tarleton head coach Cary Fowler, according to a release from Tarleton’s athletic communications department. “He’s been a great player, position coach and coordinator in this league for a long time. He knows the game of football and he knows the state of Texas very well. He’s been a part of some of the most successful programs in the Lone Star Conference and I know he will do a great job for them over there.”

UTPB is scheduled to begin playing football in 2016. Located in Odessa, UTPB currently competes in the NCAA Division II’s Heartland Conference, which does not have football.

Carrigan has been at Tarleton five years including three as offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach. The Texans averaged 522.8 yards 43.7 points under his guidance in 2014. They won a share of the LSC title in 2013.

“In my time at Tarleton State, every coach that has left us has gone for a head coach position or a Division I opportunity,” said Fowler, according to the release. “Lee Hays and Marcus White left to coach at Texas Tech, Chad Raymond left to coach at UTEP and Josh Martin is currently at Arizona State – just to name a few. We are proud of Justin and the opportunity he has to begin this next stage of his career.”
