(January 10, 2015) — Stephenville’s third straight shutout wasn’t enough to win the championship in Marble Falls’ season-opening tournament Saturday. After a scoreless tie, the Honeybees fell to 5A Salado 5-3 on penalty kicks.

“We didn’t play well enough to win the game, that’s all there is to it,” said Stephenville head coach Casey Weil in a phone interview shortly following the game. “We’re playing real well out of the back end, defensively, but offensively we just didn’t execute well enough to win.”

The Bees were shorthanded, as they usually are early in the season, but Weil says that is no excuse. Codi Beyer was out for the Erath County Junior Livestock Show. The Bees will also have varsity basketball players Lyndi Graham, Bayleigh Chaviers and Cassidy Cline in and out for the next several weeks.

“That’s the case every year, and we don’t mind that. It’s not just about soccer, it’s about Stephenville High School, and we want our kids involved in as many activities as possible,” Weil said.

The Bees won their prior tournament games 3-0 over Austin McCallum and 1-0 over Liberty Hill, both on Friday.

“We should have won (Saturday), and hopefully losing will humble us and make us better down the road,” Weil said.

The Honeybees will be at the Stephenville Soccer Complex next weekend for the annual Knights of Columbus Challenge of Champions presented by Southwest Dairy Farmers. Games will be held Friday and Saturday.
