DUBLIN (January 24, 2015) — Dublin Mayor David Leatherwood and City Administrator Nancy Woodlridge said they hoped to have someone to present to the Dublin City Council during the February 9 meeting. And while that seemed an impossible task, Dublin PD is one step closer to securing leadership.
Dublin city officials said the appointed search committee – consisting of Jimmy Leatherwood, Bobby Mendez, Darrell Curry and Layne Golden – limited the field from 37 to six applicants for the chief of police position that was left vacant in October when then-chief Shawn Fullagar resigned to take a job at Plano ISD.
A committee was nominated and approved by the Dublin City Council at the last meeting and members will now interview the six applicants and submit their picks for full background checks before limiting the field to three. Wooldridge said they were looking at lots of different aspects of the applicants. Leatherwood said the committee looked at a number of great candidates, and that some of the things they were looking for included various certifications, experience in different fields and if they speak Spanish.
“We are looking for that one person that will continue to improve Dublin PD,” Leatherwood said. “I’m confident we will have it narrowed down in time for the February council meeting.”
The position is currently being filled by Sgt. Bennie Noel as interim chief. Both the mayor and Wooldridge said Noel is doing a great job filling in as interim chief.
“No matter what the committee and then the council decide, we’ve been in good hands with Sgt. (Bennie) Noel,” Wooldridge said. “He’s done a wonderful job filling in while the council looks for the best possible person for the job, and we’re really glad to have him.”
