Tarleton baseball explodes in 2015 opener behind Meredith’s 5 RBI

(February 5, 2015) — Tarleton State opened its 2015 baseball season in grand fashion Thursday, whipping Winona State (Minn.) 15-2 at Minute Maid Park in Houston.

The Texans are competing in a Division II Classic at the home of the Houston Astros. They continue classic action against St. Mary’s (Texas) at 2 p.m. Friday, Henderson State (Ark.) at 10 a.m. Saturday and Arkansas Tech at 6 p.m. Sunday.

Leading Tarleton was was center fielder Kevin Meredith, who went 3-3 at the plate with two doubles, five runs batted in and two runs scored. Catcher Jonathan Schmitz was 3-3 with a double, a pair of walks, an RBI and three runs scored.

Matt Herrick started on the mound and got the win for the Texans, who were ahead the rest of the way after scoring three times in the top of the third. They blew the game open with a seven-run fifth. Herrick allowed two runs, both earned, on five hits and walked two while striking out four in five innings of work.

Eythan Lenz and Troyal Yosko each had a perfect inning of relief for the Texans.
