STEPHENVILLE (February 5, 2015) — Tarleton State University faculty member Dr. Cathy Young is among 168 nurse leaders from across the U.S. who were selected for induction as fellows by the American Academy of Nursing.

The American Academy of Nursing is comprised of more than 2,200 nurse leaders in education, management, practice, policy and research. The Academy fellows include hospital and government administrators, college deans and renowned scientific researchers.

Young, associate professor of nursing at Tarleton, has worked throughout her career with the underserved and with victims of domestic violence and sexual assault. She has helped victims deal with and survive their abuse and with the lifelong effects of the abuse experience. Young has worked to improve access to care for victims, while preserving their autonomy, self-efficacy, dignity and quality of life.

Young’s nursing contribution regionally, nationally and internationally has been a passionate advocacy for vulnerable women and children in abusive situations. Her teaching and practice started in the Mississippi Delta tri-state region, an area plagued with extreme poverty, complex social issues, multiple health problems and poor medical coverage.

Her driving commitment led to co-founding one of the first child advocacy centers in Missouri. This evidence-based visionary work continues with more than 3,000 survivors accessing care over the last 15 years. She formed essential multidisciplinary teams (social workers, law enforcement, nurses and teachers) from three states and integrated family nurse practitioner students for important Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner (SANE) educational seminars.  Her work reduced disparities for racial and ethnic minorities.

Young has worked with the Arkansas State Police Crimes Against Children Investigation Unit to establish children SAFE exams and to translate physical findings for investigators. Further, her testimony and evidence (sometimes as many as five to seven cases monthly) have provided important tangible support to influence both judges and juries about these complex abusive situations. She has presented findings from her work regionally, nationally and internationally.

Young received her master of science in nursing from the University of Missouri-Kansas City, a post-master’s as a family nurse practitioner and her doctor of nursing science from the University of Tennessee Health Science Center in 2002.

The Academy fellows, with the addition of this newest class, represent all 50 states, the District of Columbia, and 24 countries. To learn more about the American Academy of Nursing, visit http://www.aannet.org.
