STEPHENVILLE (February 5, 2015) — Stephenville superintendent Matt Underwood says as of Thursday morning he had received 33 applications for the school’s football head coaching vacancy

Stephenville, a five-time state champion and perennial power on the gridiron, has been without a head coach/athletic director since Joseph Gillespie left on January 23 to become linebackers coach at the University of Tulsa. Assistant athletic director and head athletic trainer Mike Carroll has since been serving as interim athletic director while offensive coordinator Greg Winder is overseeing offseason football operations.

Sources say Stephenville coaches are backing Winder as the school’s next head coach and athletic director, but external candidates are also receiving consideration, Underwood says.

“We will continue receiving applications and start looking through them on February 19,” said Underwood, who is appointing a local committee to aid in the hiring process. “We haven’t received a high quantity (of applicants), but we have received several that are high quality.”

Stephenville has reached the state quarterfinals five straight years, including winning the school’s fifth state title  in 2012.
