STEPHENVILLE (February 10, 2015) — Stephenville applied pressure all night and finally broke through in the 70th minute for its first District 4-4A soccer win Tuesday.
Erin Couch belted one home off a cross from Tatum Sharp and a dominating midfield and defensive performance made it stand as the Honeybees defeated Brownwood 1-0 at Stephenville Soccer Complex.
“This was a huge victory for morale,” said Stephenville head coach Casey Weil, whose club regularly plays shorthanded due to basketball and had lost its opening two 4-4A matches. “We needed this one just to get our confidence back.”
The Bees were coming off narrow district losses to Mineral Wells and No. 9 Abilene Wylie, but dominated the pace from the onset against Brownwood, applying all the pressure in the first half.
Savannah Alford just missed twice in the second half or it would have been a rout for Stephenville, which hosts Mineral Wells on Friday at 6 p.m. with the boys teams to follow at about 7:30.
“It was one of those games where I knew we were in control but didn’t know if we would ever break through,” said Weil. “When we finally did I felt good about it because we were playing well defensively.”
Madison Kalsbeek played a major role to limit pressure in the back. Brownwood never mounted a serious scoring threat. Alford, Couch and company basically controlled the midfield in Stephenville’s second win over Brownwood. The first was not a district match, but came in the semifinal round of the Knights of Columbus Challenge of Champions won by the Bees.
Brownwood handed Stephenville’s boys their first loss in district, 2-0, in the nightcap.
