(February 14, 2015) — Sophomore Matt Herrick didn’t need a lot of run support, but Alec Humphreys and Collin Scribner gave him just enough.

Herrick fired seven shutout innings from the mound while Humphreys and Scribner each belted solo home runs to lift Tarleton State (3-2) to a 2-0 win in San Antonio Friday, it’s second early-season victory over always-tough St. Mary’s (3-3).

It was the first of a three-game series at Dickson Stadium, with a doubleheader following at 1 p.m. Saturday.

Humphreys made sure Tarleton played from ahead the whole way, leading off the game with his home run. Scribner, a redshirt freshman, dropped his bomb to lead off the fifth.

Herrick got into a bases-loaded one-out jam in the third, but started a double play himself, tossing the ball home for one out before Jonathan Schmitz fired to first for another. Herrick allowed just an infield single from the fourth through the seventh innings. St. Mary’s only other baserunner during that stretch reached on an error.

Herrick (2-0) allowed just three hits and didn’t issue a walk in seven innings. Eythan Lenz and Seth Hallmark combined to work the eighth, when the only Rattler runner reached on an error. John Kresta worked a perfect ninth for his first Tarleton save.

Each team had three total hits. Tarleton’s only base knock that didn’t leave the yard was a bunt single by shortstop Ethan Robinson.
