(February 16, 2015) — Tarleton State (4-3) took two of three from perennial power St. Mary’s (4-4) in San Antonio this weekend, giving the Texans three wins in four games against the Rattlers this season.

Tarleton was shutout 3-0 before winning 12-4 in a Saturday doubleheader at Dickson Stadium. Tarleton won the series opener 2-0 on Friday.

Tarleton exploded in the series finale, scoring four times in the fifth and four more in the eighth.

Kevin Meredith was 3-5 and drove in five runs, including a 3-run shot that highlighted the big eighth inning. He also had a 2-run double in the top of the third to give Tarleton a 3-2 lead that would only grow the rest of the way.

Meredith, Brandon Villeneuve and Dalton Weeks each had two doubles as the Texans amassed 16 hits, eight of them for extra bases. That includes a fourth-inning solo home run by Alec Humphreys.

Colton Burleson started on the mound for the Texans, allowing two runs on three hits while striking out four over the first three innings. Trevor Renfro (1-0) allowed a run on three hits in three innings of relief and was the winner. Seth Hallmark, Hunter Houston and Quade Adams also made appearances on the mound for Tarleton.

C. Butler (1-1) was in control of all seven innings in the opening game of the doubleheader. The St. Mary’s starter allowed six hits and a walk while shutting out the Texans. Tarleton didn’t have an extra base hit, and St. Mary’s played error-free defense behind Butler.

Tarleton’s pitching was also effective, with Kyle Gottardy (0-1) allowing two runs on three hits in 4.1 innings, followed by 1.2 innings of shutout relief by Troyal Yosko.

Tarleton’s home opener is Friday at Cecil Ballow Baseball Complex. The Texans host Texas A&M-International at 3 p.m., the first of a four-game series. Tarleton and TAMUI have a doubleheader at 1 p.m. Saturday and a single game at 1 p.m. Sunday.
