STEPHENVILLE (March 14, 2015) — Angelo State got the last laugh after all.
Sixth-seeded ASU (27-5) defeated No. 3 seed Texas A&M-Commerce (24-8) 85-79 in the opening game of the South Central Region Championship at Wisdom Gym Saturday. The Rams advance to face No. 2 Metropolitan State-College Denver or No. 7 Midwestern State at 5 p.m. Sunday.
It was the fourth meeting between the Lone Star Conference rivals, as Angelo State avenged losses in the previous two including the LSC Championship final in Allen just a week prior. The teams ended up splitting their four meetings.
Mayfield pumped 24 points through the net including eight consecutive ASU points in the second half, helping the Rams hold off a late charge by TAMUC. Marsell Holden gave ASU a big cushion, hitting five straight second-half 3-pointers early in the second half on his way to 22 total points.
Raijon Kelly and Chris Jones were also in double figures with 14 and 12, respectively.
Texas A&M-Commerce was led by LSC Player of the Year Darrell Williams with 22 points and 18 rebounds. La Don Carnegie scored 13, Christian Macauley 11 and Anthony Adams 11.
