STEPHENVILLE (March 19, 2015) — Another Stephenville Yellow Jacket is moving on to play at the collegiate level.

Defensive end Justice Bethea signed a letter of intent with Angelo State University Thursday morning. ASU, located in San Angelo, is reigning champion of the Lone Star Conference and won an opening round game in the NCAA Division II playoffs last season.

“It’s a program that’s on the rise. Last year they went 9-3,” said Bethea. “When I went and met with the coaching staff I really liked them. They are dedicated to working hard, and that’s what I’m all about. We have mutual goals.”

Bethea made 73 tackles including 20 behind the line of scrimmage last fall, helping Stephenville reach the state quarterfinals for the fifth consecutive season. But he knows success doesn’t come easy at the next level.

“It’s going to be hard. It’s not high school ball anymore, it’s the next level,” said Bethea. “You just have to go in and work hard, and that’s what we did in high school was work hard every day.”

Bethea will be facing off with former Stephenville teammates who have signed with Tarleton State, also a member of the LSC. But he says any rivalry that develops will be a friendly one.

“We’re family first. We’ve been in a brotherhood the last four years,” he said. “We realize we need to keep in touch as we move on to the next level.”
